PACKING GUIDE

Packing list for 5 days.

By Bryson Meunier  ·  March 2026

Five days is the sweet spot of travel — long enough to need real outfit variety, short enough to do carry-on. This is the exact framework I use, built around your actual wardrobe instead of a generic checklist.

For a 5-day trip, pack 4 outfits and plan to re-wear one bottom on day 5. The formula: 2-3 bottoms, 4 tops in a coordinating color palette, 2 pairs of shoes, 1 outer layer, 5 sets of socks and underwear. Most 5-day trips fit in a carry-on if you choose pieces that combine with each other rather than packing individual items you like.

Why 5 days is a different packing problem

A weekend trip (2 days) is easy — throw in three outfits and go. Two weeks is straightforward in a different way — plan to do laundry. Five days sits in between. Too long to wing it, too short to justify checking a bag. It's the length where packing decisions actually make a difference.

Most 5-day packing lists fail for the same reason: they list items without thinking about combinations. The result is a bag full of things that don't go together — a shirt that only works with one specific pair of trousers you also packed, shoes that don't match anything else, an outer layer that's either too formal or too casual for everything on the itinerary. For the full packing system, see how to pack for a trip. For the pillar page that covers all trip lengths, see the AI packing list guide.

The numbers

5

Four outfits for five days means one re-wear. That's typically a bottom — trousers or jeans worn twice in different combinations. Tops are lighter and easier to rotate. Statement pieces (a patterned shirt, a distinctive jacket) appear once. Basics (a white tee, dark trousers) can appear twice without registering as a repeat.

The 5-day packing list

BOTTOMS
1 pair versatile trousers or dark jeans (wear 2×, different tops)
1 pair casual trousers, chinos, or lighter jeans (wear 2×)
Optional 3rd bottom if trip includes formal event or swimwear
TOPS
1 slightly dressier shirt or blouse (for your nicest moment of the trip)
2 mid-weight versatile tops (button-down, clean tee, quality knit)
1 casual top (travel day, downtime)
Every top should pair with at least 2 of your bottoms
SHOES
1 pair versatile shoes covering your most formal occasion (loafer, clean boot, low heel)
1 pair comfortable walking shoes (already broken in)
Wear your bulkier pair on travel days — they don't take up bag space
LAYERS
1 outer layer for the destination climate (jacket, cardigan, packable rain shell)
1 scarf or light layer if temperature range warrants it
ESSENTIALS
5 sets socks and underwear (non-negotiable)
Sleepwear or designated comfortable layer
Any event-specific items (swimsuit, gym clothes) only if the activity is confirmed

What each day looks like

DAY 1
Travel day
Comfortable but not sloppy. Walking shoes, casual top, a versatile bottom. Wear your bulkiest items on the plane.
DAY 2
First full day
Fresh start. Your best everyday outfit — nothing too precious, but a step up from travel day.
DAY 3
Most formal
Your dressiest shirt or blouse, a good pair of trousers, proper shoes. This is the outfit the trip was planned around.
DAY 4
Re-wear day
The trousers from Day 1 with a different top. Nobody notices. Most overpacking exists specifically to avoid this moment.
DAY 5
Travel home
Casual top, comfortable bottom, walking shoes. Wear the bulkiest things; pack the rest.
THE COMBINATION TEST

Before finalizing your 5-day list, lay every item on the bed and count how many full outfits you can build from what's there. If you can't make at least 6 combinations from your tops and bottoms, your color palette is too scattered. Solve it by swapping one item for a neutral that connects to more things — not by adding more items.

The carry-on question

Most 5-day trips fit in carry-on. The IATA estimates that 52% of travelers globally already prefer carry-on only — and the ones who don't are largely people who didn't plan outfits before packing items. The things that break that: a suit, dress boots, or serious winter outerwear. If you need those, check a bag — looking wrong costs more than a baggage fee.

For carry-on packing, compression packing cubes reduce clothing volume by 30–40%. Shoes go sole-down against one side of the bag. Roll soft items; fold structured ones. Liquids under 100ml in a separate pouch at the top of the bag. The goal is one carry-on plus one personal item — you should be able to go from curb to gate in 20 minutes.

How DRESSED builds this list from your wardrobe

Generic packing lists tell you what category of item to pack. DRESSED tells you which specific items. When you add a 5-day trip to your Google Calendar, Vera looks at your destination weather, your itinerary, and your actual closet — and names the specific pieces that cover the trip.

If you own two pairs of dark trousers, Vera knows which one packs better, which pairs with more of your tops, and which one you've worn recently. She builds a 5-day plan that uses your actual clothes rather than a template of things you might own. See the full approach in the AI packing list guide.

Pack smarter with DRESSED

DRESSED builds your 5-day packing list from your actual wardrobe — accounting for destination weather, your itinerary, and the specific occasions you need to dress for. No generic checklists.

Frequently asked questions

What should I pack for a 5-day trip?

2-3 bottoms, 4 tops in a coordinating color palette, 2 pairs of shoes, 1 outer layer, and 5 sets of socks and underwear. Plan 4 outfits and re-wear one bottom on day 5. Most 5-day trips fit in a carry-on if you use compression packing cubes and choose lightweight fabrics.

Can I do a 5-day trip with carry-on only?

Yes — for most destinations and occasions. Build 4 outfits first, then pack only the items those outfits require. The result typically fits a standard carry-on with room to spare. Exceptions: trips requiring a suit, formal boots, or heavy winter outerwear.

How many outfits should I bring for 5 days?

Plan 4 distinct outfits and re-wear 1 item (usually a bottom) on the fifth day. That means 2-3 bottoms and 4 tops in colors that mix with each other. Statement pieces appear once; basics can repeat without reading as a repeat outfit.

How do I build a travel capsule wardrobe for 5 days?

Start with 2 neutral bottoms (dark jeans or trousers, lighter chinos or trousers). Choose 4 tops that each pair with both bottoms — neutrals (white, grey, navy, cream) give maximum combinations. Add shoes that cover your most formal and most casual moments. Every item should have at least 2 uses on the trip.

Should I check a bag for a 5-day trip?

Carry-on is strongly recommended for most 5-day trips — you save time at both ends, never risk lost luggage, and the constraint forces better packing decisions. Check a bag if your trip requires a suit, formal gown, or bulky winter gear that won't compress. See the full packing list guide for more trip lengths.
